Winter Term 2012

Welcome to Winter Term 2012.
I'm teaching Math 65, Math 95, and Math 244 this term.
As always, if you have never been on this blog before, read the "First Post" for instructions.
And please identify yourself ... if only by class and section number or CRN.
Have a great term.

I wrote that wrong. I understand how to do the table. But I'm a little confused on the the Slope intercept. On # 21 of 5.1 pg 298 it gives y=2x which I understand the y-intercept is 0 and the slope is 2, which rise over run would = 2 over 2. So in graphing I start at the 2 and go up 2 and over 2. So it ends up being (4,0). What confuses me is the 2nd one, y=-x+6. The y-intercept is 6, but I don't understand how to get the x-intercept. In the book is shows it being (6,6). Can you help me understand what I'm missing please?

  3. On #21, you start at the y-intercept, which would be the point (0,0). Then you go "up 2, then right 1" to get to the second point (1,2). Now you have two points to graph the line.

On the second one, y=x+6, the y-intercept is the point (0,6). From THAT point, since the slope is 1, you go up 1and right 1 to get the second point (1,7).

In neither case are to trying for the x-intercept in this method. If you what that method, use the little table.

Hey I can't figure out how to graph the problem in Sec 2.4 #85. I get as far as putting in an equation and then i hit f2 and then 6 for standard window. It shows the y-max, x max graph thingy but it doesn't show the line of the equation.

On pg 53 #7 I'm not getting the right answer. using 2samp t test & mueB less than or equal to mueA. Book says MueD greater than or equal to zero. Why and how to enter in calc?

Sondra, on that one i did the difference between the market share before and after and then used T-test command and got the right answer. However what i am confused about is for part A on that i used (after death)-(before death)and then used those answers in the data for T-test but on the second part (part B) i had to reverse the order of subtraction to (before death)-(after death) that was the only way for me to get the correct answer. Curiouse as to why i had to switch them and if that is allways the case, and how i will know which to use where, (A-B or B-A for either the Interval or the T-Test.)

    Thanks!

    I also had a question on pg 53 #8, I for some reason am drawing a blank on how to do this problem, or even how to start it. Maybe its all the mountain dew iv been drinking but i cannot understand it at all, if anyone could point me in the right direction i believe it will refresh my memory, (hopefully) :}

  8. On Math 244, problem 7, pages 53-54:
When you switch the order of subtraction in a Paired Difference t test, it should change the signs of much of the work, but as you noted, you got the right answer (p-value). Since that p-value is what you really want, the sign changes don't matter. Just write down your version of the difference and stick with it.

  9. On Math 244, problem 8, page 54:
This is a test comparing two population proportions.
Remember as you work, it's comparing the percent of low sperm count incidents, so a higher percent means a lower sperm count.

In section 6.4 page 451 problem # 89 I am getting confused. if I multiply both sides of my equation 5/x-2 - 5/x = 1/8 by 8x(x-2) i get 0 = x^2-2x the solution manual states 40x-40x+80=x^2-2x and they solve it. My question is this if 8x(x-2).5/x-2 - 5/x would equal 40-40 or zero!! not 40x-40x+80 what am I missing??

  14. Being in trouble to understand certain parts of math is plausible as this is one of some difficult subjects many students are suffering from. If you are searching for a math tutor for your child, you should know how important it is for your child to understand math. No matter what grade your child is in, there is math help for him or her.
