Fall Term 2012

Welcome to Fall Term 2012. This term, I teach Math 60, Math 65, and Math 95 at PCC Southeast. I also teach Math 243 at Mt Hood. Please be sure to fully identify your class when you post a question. It will prevent me for having to search you out in my gradebooks and can shorten the time to a response to a question. Have a great term!

  2. Hi Barry,
Is there homework for math 60 and 65 the first week of class? It would be due tomorrow if so. The CRN for the class I am asking about is 42264. The calendar says that on Wednesday we will be working on 1.1 and 1.2. Should I have that work done by class?
    Thank you,
    Jeremy and Carly Ballard

  4. 11 Down is much like 8 Down.
12 Down starts with an "f", think about the number we use to identify a radio station. For 103.1 FM, the number 103.1 is the f_____ on the radio dial.

  9. Hi Barry, this is Alex from your M/W Math 95 class @ PCC

I had a question about the homework assigned, I think some of the questions had (eoo) next to them instead of (odd).

    For instance, 2.3 #7-67 (?) and 3.1 #19 - 59

Did it say (eoo) and if so could you explain what this means.

    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

  10. I DID MEAN eoo, which means "every other odd" problem.
    The numbers 7-67 (eoo) start with 7, skip 9, do 11, skip 13, do 15, ...

  11. Hello Barry,
I just wanted to remind you that I really would like to get my 3 or 4 remaining assignments back from your (MTH 95 Spring term) class. Did you locate them at your home as we discussed two weeks ago? Using those past math papers help me to remember the formulas and problems I worked out, so I can use the knowledge for my MTH 111 class. Thank you, Robert S.

  12. Hi Barry,

This is Alex from your Math 95 class. I was wondering if you found a TI-89 Ti and a yellow pencil bag in your 4-6:20pm math class yesterday. Can't seem to find them today and that's the last place I saw them.

    Thanks,
    Alex

  14. Hi Barry,

I'm unable to make it to class tonight. Would you still accept HW#5 if turned in next Wednesday? (Considering that Monday is a holiday).

    Thank you,

  16. Hi Barry, Mara from MTH 243 can you please explain to me how the empirical rule works

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's mara again..i understand the concept but need some clarification

  18. Mara

The Empirical Rule shows us a way to check how "mound-shpaed" a sample may be.

    According to the rule:
    1) About 68% of the data is within one standard deviation from the mean.
    2) About 95% of the data is within two standard deviations from the mean.
    3) Nearly all the data is within three standard deviations from the mean.

The process is to determine what percent of YOUR SAMPLE is within one, two, and three standard deviations from the mean and compare to the percents in the rule above. The closer to true mound-shaped data you have, the closer to the percents (overall) you will obtain from the rule.

  19. Hi Barry, it's Jessica from math 95. I was wondering if you could help me work through problems 1 a and b from quiz 3. I'm having trouble figuring out where I went wrong. I don't know if you can work the problems online, or if I'd need to come see you in person before class today, but I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!!
