    I am having trouble opening the course supplement file. I use Firefox with Windows 7, and I have a decent connection. The other docs on the portal open just fine for me. Is anyone else having this problem, or are there any tricks I'm missing?

  2. Loren,
    The supplement is a "pdf" file. It requires Adobe's Acrobat Reader or a Mac to view. Google "Adobe Reader", then download the reader. Once the reader is installed, you can double-click on the file and the reader will open with your supplement.

    P.S. counting rules, verifying homework, #4, having trouble setting this one up. Not sure, factorial?

  5. Remember, there are eight digits (2 through 9).
    Now use the Fundamental Counting Rule to count the number of seven digit phone numbers possible (8^7).

  6. Problem Set: Probability Question #3, d. & #4 C. How do you set these up?

  7. Problem 3d:
    P(not Freshman)+P(Upper classman)- P(both) (Addition rule)

    Problem 4d:
    P(at least D)=1-P(F) ("F" is the complement of "at least D")

  8. Dear Barry I can not seem to find the quiz files on my course for your Monday and Wednesday class from 12noon to 2:20pm.

  9. Problem set: probability
    How do you set up question # 5d?

  10. Problem set: probability
    and how would you set up # 5c?

    Thanks

    PS -discrete random variables, pg. 37.
    Trouble with setup on #4 & #5. I think #4 is x=35, n=20, p = .59 then 1-binomcdf(35,.59,20)=.52465. On #5 I'm setting up the same way, 1-binomcdf(12,.53,8) = .10658.?Thanks,

  12. On problem 5c, the word "assuming" means the same as "given".
    P(male | <40K) = P(male and <40K) / P(<40K)

    On problem 5d, the key word is "or".
    P(male or <40K) = P(male) + P(<40K) - P(male and <40K)

  13. On problem 4 in "Discrete Random Variables":
    n=35, p=0.59, k=20
    P(X>=20) = 1 - P(x<=19)

    On problem 5 in "Discrete Random Variables":
    n=12, p=0.53, k=8
    P(X>=8) = 1 - P(x<=7)

    Hi Barry
    It's Star from ur MTH 95 class(I came with my daughter on mon)
    I cant get onto mypcc from my phone so I have to leave u a msg on here
    After I seen u on monday I had to be rushed to hospital with severe stomach pains. They sent me home and now pains are back so I am going to hospital again. Don't know how long I will be there this time so I wont make class. Can I turn homework in on monday? Is there anything else I'm going to miss? What is the new homework? My Bio teacher asked for a doctors note, do u need one too? Can u please email me back at sstarlite21@aol.com. that way I can read it on my phone
    thanks so much

  15. Star,
    Just get well. Don't worry about a note. We'll fix things in class after you get well.

  16. I am reviewing the math midterm,
    on 2a, P(no more than 28 days) Is binomialcdf(n,p,k) right?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Referring to 2a, how would binomcdf(n,p,k) work? theres no percentage or sample size. i think normalcdf(-e99,28,28.3,5.4) works better. Right?

  18. I won't comment to the inputs for the command, but for a problem about a "normally distributed" random variable, the normalcdf command works nicely.

    Hi Barry, on the Lab assignment, page 68, President's Age Data. I'm trying to set up my Window on my calculator to do the histogram and boxplot. I'm getting close to what looks like a good graph but if I change my numbers to higher or lower numbers the graph gets too big or little. I'm using Xmin=
    -25,Xmax=70,Xscl=15,Ymin=
    -25,Ymax=70,Yscl=15,Xres=1. I have min=42,Q1=51,med=55,Q3=58,max=69. Am I anywhere in the ballpark?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Try Xmin = 40, Xmax = 70, Xscl = 5, Ymin = -5, Ymax = 20, Yscl = 5. Your Xmin and Ymin were way too low.
    Adjust in small amounts from the settings above.
    Barry

  25. Mth243-04, from Jean G.,
    I'm reviewing homework and prepping for final, if you'll have an EDA problem, need help on process. For PS-EDA, pg. 69, I'm following all the steps we did in ours teams, following steps 1 thru 4 on pgs. 64 & 65 & 66. Is that correct to do all 4 steps?

    Also I'm still having some trouble with setting up correct Windows in step 3. For #1, I have minX-3.3, Q1-5.3,Med-6.15, q3-10.4, MaxX-14,5. I've been trying Xmin-1,Xmax-16,Xscl-2, Ymin-1,Ymax-16, yscl-2 with no luck, I've been adjusting each of them by just a few also.Maybe I'm not understanding what values match up with the Windows values?

  26. Hey Barry, I'm having some issues with hw page 45, CRV #3, e & g, I got the others, but just can't figure those two out. Also 1, 2, and 5, can you point me in the right direction, im just blank.

    Thnaks, Annette

    Hi Barry, I wanted to stay for after-class time, but had to get to work this morning. I think I figured out the questions about EDA. However, I'm having similar problems as Annette with CRV, pg. 45&46, just realizing I passed over and forgo to go back and finish these problems. I'm probably using the wrong function. For #4 IQ>15 in calc.: normalcdf (115,E99,100,225) and I get .4734234648. #4c, in calc. normalcdf (140,E99,100,225) = .429448754. Also #5, I was setting up as mean=$86, S.D>=$11.50, p<$100. $86-$100/11.50=

    Hi Barry, I'm going over the homework & making my notes and I realized I didn't do PS: Correlation & Regression Pg81. Was it assigned?

    I have PS:Sampling Dist's pg 74, ass'd 5/17 and PS:Confidence Intv's pg 89, ass'd 5/24. Can you confirm which problem sets need to be done.

    Thanks!
